On Sunday afternoon, the Faculty of Natural Sciences hosted the Hanover premiere of the documentary “Das Gewicht der Welt” as part of the closing events of the LUH Sustainability Week 2026. The Screening at Apollo Cinema in Linden was initiated by Prof. Weinhart from the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electro Chemistry.
Also present were glaciologist Dr. Maria Hörhold and physical chemist Prof. Sebastian Seiffert, both featured in the film. The documentary follows their daily scientific work and explores the tension between insights gained through scientific research and the personal responsibility that arises from these findings in light of the advancing climate crisis.
Following the screening, audience members had the opportunity to engage directly with the scientists and discuss possible solutions as well as ways of coping with the gradual climate crisis, navigating the space between hope and feelings of helplessness.
The Faculty of Natural Sciences at Leibniz University Hannover considers it part of its societal responsibility not only to promote excellent research but also to communicate scientific findings more actively to society at large. Sustainability aspects of research in the natural sciences are therefore currently addressed, among other initiatives, in an interdisciplinary teaching module offered by the faculty, within which the documentary was also presented during the summer semester.
