Magnetic resonance in exceptional breadth and depth through an interdisciplinary approach in a highly topical field of research
The Magnetic Resonance Division of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) has honoured Professor Dr Paul Heitjans for his outstanding scientific life’s work. In September 2025, he received the Otto Stern Prize in Bonn. This award recognises his pioneering contributions to the study of ion dynamics and diffusion in solids using NMR, as well as his establishment of β-NMR as a method for investigating mobility in solid ionic conductors.
The Otto Stern Award of the GDCh Magnetic Resonance Division is presented to internationally distinguished scientists in the field of magnetic resonance. The award was established in 2020 to commemorate Nobel Laureate Otto Stern, whose discovery of spin quantisation laid the foundation for magnetic resonance. The distinction includes a certificate, a trophy, and invitations to deliver a plenary lecture and attend a celebratory dinner. It is normally conferred once a year by a committee of the Division’s executive board.
